According to their website, Next Generation Wrestling: Tennessee is an independent wrestling organization based out of Newport, Tennessee. They have been operating consistently since 2014, bringing in top independent wrestling stars such as: Matt Cross, Cody Rhodes, Johnny Gargano and Zack Sabre Jr to name a few.

The River City Sports and Social Club bills themselves as a place to meet people who like to play sports and love to socialize. They offer all adult co-ed sports leagues in bowling, kickball, axe throwing, skeeball and more. Players of all skill levels are welcome. Participants must be 21 years or older.

The complex where the venue is located contains numerous businesses. Several of them have large “No Parking” signs which threaten towing if you park in their area of the lot. If you attend an event at this location, give yourself a little extra time and make sure you park in an authorized zone.

As I entered the venue, I immediately passed by Dirty Dango, formerly known as Fandango in WWE. Dango had given a wrestling seminar earlier in the day, but did not perform at the event. Standing next to him were Moose and Matt Cross. Inside the arena, there were numerous merchandise tables along the walls. The usual performer tables for stars such as Alpha Inc., Dani Mo, and Jake Manning were set up on either side of the arena. In addition, there were several general merchandise tables selling AEW action figures, DVDs, and lucha masks, and more.

MATCH #1
KALEB with a K vs. JTG

Kaleb Konley and JTG prepare to square off in the opening contest

The night started with a match featuring two well-known performers in the wrestling industry. The fans in the arena jumped all over Kaleb with a K as he stepped into the ring wearing his glitter neck brace and using his cell phone to take selfies. JTG, who I just recently saw at Virginia Championship Wrestling three weeks earlier (check out my review here), caused Kaleb to flee the ring the moment he entered.

Kaleb refused to get into the ring to start the match, leading to even more jeers from the crowd. Eventually, he made his way in, but he fleed to the ring ropes the moment JTG tried to lock up with him. JTG looked to the fans and said, “BOO THIS MAN!!” The fans, of course, were happy to oblige.

The match got going with another lock up that ended up in the corner. The referee called for a break, but JTG commenced fixing his hair instead of breaking cleanly. Kaleb took the opportunity to kick JTG in the midsection, which stunned him briefly. Fired up, JTG landed a dropkick, a sling blade, and a back body drop, then started working Kaleb’s ribs. JTG hit four shoulder blocks on Kaleb in the corner. When JTG attempted a fifth, Kaleb moved which caused JTG’s shoulder to collide with the ring post.

Kaleb used this opportunity to take control of the match. He started with chops to JTG’s chest in the corner. After a quick pin attempt, Kaleb hurled JTG into the turnbuckle face first. Kaleb draped JTG’s neck over the ropes and stomped on it repeatedly. Finally, Kaleb caught JTG in an arm bar in the center of the ring and told the referee to ask if he would submit. The fans began clapping encouragement to JTG who refused to do so.

As the contest wound down, Kaleb went to hit JTG with his fanny pack, but the referee took it away from him. At that moment, JTG tried to launch himself into the ring from the apron, but got caught with a punch to the face from Kaleb. Kaleb climbed to the top rope and stomped on JTG whose neck was draped over the top rope. Confident, Kaleb turned to taunt the crowd. This gave JTG the opportunity to sneak in, put him in position for a Razor’s Edge, and drop Kaleb into a cutter for the victory.

WINNER: JTG

MATCH #2
ALPHA, INC. vs. THE LOST BOYS & “MANSCOUT” JAKE MANNING

Manscout Manning reads his Manscout Manual

United Elite Wrestling tag team champions, Alpha Inc., consisting of Mac Butler, Sledge Gibson, and “Double K” Kris Keith were very familiar to the fans in the RVA and were cheered upon their arrival. Next, the The Lost Boys, Adam Slade and Bradley Prescott IV made their way from the dressing room. They stopped, formed a little London Bridge with their hands, and made a special entrance way for their partner, The Manscout, Jake Manning.

Slade and Gibson started the match and went for a lockup right away. However, Adam Slade had other ideas. Slade faked and passed right by Gibson. On the second attempt, Slade faked again. This time, he turned back to Sledge Gibson and hit a peacock pose.

Slade tagged in Bradley Prescott IV who tried to dive into the ring from the apron, as well, but got caught on the ropes. As he was about to be thrown into the corner, Adam Slade, handed his partner a beer. Prescott continued to wrestle with the beer in his hand until he tagged in Jake Manning.

The Manscout entered the match with an object in his hands as well: his scouting handbook. As Manning read his book, “Double K” Kris Keith tagged in. The two men started a criss cross with Manning still reading his book. This ended when Manning got tired of running back and forth and lied down on his stomach to continue reading. Confused, Keith attempted an elbow drop but missed as Manning rolled to one side with his book. Sledge Gibson attempted an elbow drop. Same result. Manning rose to his feet and hit a hurricanrana on Keith, then a coffin drop from the top rope onto his two opponents.

Later, Slade and Prescott would work together to hit several back to back spears from the opposite corner, followed by final spear where Slade picked up Prescott in a wheelbarrow and threw him forward. The Lost Boys celebrated this onslaught with their version of The Running Man dance in the ring and a pose for the camera. Sledge Gibson charged, but was body slammed to the mat, which resulted in a second celebratory pose by the Lost Boys.

Toward the end of the match, Adam Slade picked up one member of Alpha, Inc. into an airplane spin. The rotations of the airplane spin ultimately knocked down every person in the ring. Bradley Prescott hit a 450 splash and a Falcon Arrow, then went for the pin. The referee informed him that he was not the legal man, which caused all three Lost Boyscouts to argue with the referee. This gave Alpha Inc. an opportunity. A sit out power bomb from Mac Butler followed by a Kris Keith finisher was all she wrote.

WINNER: ALPHA, INC.

 MATCH #3
BEAU CROCKETT vs. SUGE D
NGW EASTERN STATES CHAMPIONSHIP

Suge D gets ready to show Beau Crockett his finest dance moves

This match was billed as a Triple Threat match which also was to involve Kenji Brea. The fans seemed upset at Brea’s absence and started chanting, “Where’s the other guy?!” The two men remaining in the match Beau Crockett and Eastern States Champion Suge D managed to put on quite a show on their own, however.

The match started with a Suge D standing wristlock on Beau Crockett that he used to force Crockett to the mat. From there, Crockett reversed into a wristlock of his own and let Suge D know that, “I don’t like you!” Suge D rolled through and reversed into a single leg crab. Beau managed to reach the ropes, but Suge held the move until the referee counted to four and a half.

As Crockett gathered himself, Suge D rested on the top turnbuckle. After a reset, Suge offered a test of strength with Beau Crockett. When Beau started to lock up, he told Suge that “You don’t want to do that.” Suge responded, “You’re right!” and rolled through, frustrating Beau Crockett. Suge D decided there was only one way to solve the issue. He yelled out for the DJ to drop a beat. When MC Hammer’s “U Can’t Touch This” played, the two competitors took part in a dance off!! (See video here).

The wrestling resumed when Suge D landed some blows to Beau Crockett in one corner, Beau reversed into an exploder suplex after which the competitors exchanged punches in the center of the ring. Beau ended the back and forth with a kick to Suge’s stomach, a suplex and a two count.

Later, Beau attempted a fisherman’s suplex but was blocked by the champion. Suge attemped one of his own, but failed. The two continued the near-suplexes until Suge D was finally able to power Beau up and over his head for real. The referee counted as the two men lied on the mat exhausted. As soon as they stood back up, Crockett and Suge started again with the punch exchange.

A wind-up right from Suge D knocked Beau to the mat. Another winding right by Suge D would miss Crockett. This opened the door for Beau to hit a ripcord clothesline. A near fall would convince Beau to try a second ripcord clothesline. This time, the challenger missed. A headbutt from the champion stunned Crockett long enough for him to be rolled up in a small package.

WINNER: SUGE D

MATCH #4
ARMY MAN” ERICA LEIGH vs. DANI MO

Army Man lays it in against Dani Mo

Announced as hailing from Farts Unknown, Erica Leigh made her way to the ring as farts played through the PA system instead of actual entrance music. Erica, dressed in army fatigues, let the crowd know that her name was Army Man. Any fan who called her Erica that night was corrected immediately. Army Man tried to get Dani Mo, one half of the Neon Blondes, to salute her in the center of the ring before the match could start.

After an exchange of wristlocks and headlocks, Dani Mo threw Army Man over. The competitors would find themselves locked up in the corner which prompted the referee to call for a break. Army Man broke cleanly, but then went for a punch and missed. Dani Mo whipped Army Man into the other corner and finished with a monkey flip.

Army man rolled out for a breather. When she returned, she took control of Dani Mo with punches and chops in one corner, followed by an Irish Whip that ended in a flapjack to Dani. After another series of blows from one combatant to the other, Army Man hit a lariat. As Dani clawed her way up the ropes, Army Man hit Dani with shoulder tackles in the corner.

Army Man garnered just a two count after a whip in and a big boot to Dani’s face, which angered Army Man enough to pummel Dani with punches to her head. Army Man climbed to the second rope and saluted before she attempted a senton and missed. Dani tried a kick to the midsection, but Army Man caught her foot which allowed Dani to hit an ensiguri with the other one.

Dani connected with Shining Wizard to Army Man, then picked her up in a fireman’s carry, but Army Man escaped. Dani made a second attempt for the fireman’s. This time, she held on and threw Army Man backwards onto her face. The fans began clapping enouragement as Dani climbed to the middle rope. Army Man rose to her feet and managed to kick Dani Mo off of her perch enough to put Dani on her back for a Samoan Drop.

Another flurry of blows between the fighters started the moment Dani made her way back to her feet. Dani hit a Falcon Arrow and climbed to the top rope. From there, Dani Mo did a tightrope walk from the turnbuckles along the ropes and sprung into a flying cross body on Army Man.

WINNER: DANI MO

MATCH #5
TIMMY DANGER & KADEN SADE vs. RENEGADES OF FLIGHT

Facade and Jason Kincaid prepare to do battle with Timmy Danger and Kaden Sade

Kaden Sade and Timmy Danger were met with a chorus of boos upon their arrival at Bogus Journey. Inside the ring, Kaden tested the ropes and let the referee know he was not pleased with their condition. Kaden said he found them to be jiggly, just like the fans in attendance.

Once the bell finally rang, Kaden and Jason Kincaid held wrist locks until Kaden went for a hurricanrana to Kincaid. Kaden hit the move, but Kincaid ended up sitting perfectly still in meditation position on the mat, infuriating Sade. After a flurry of moves and a simultaneous kip up by Kade and Kincaid, Jason Kincaid extended a fist to Kaden Sade for a fist bump. Kaden refused and chopped his opponent instead. In response, Kincaid removed his shirt and hit some even louder chops. The two men exchanged chops until Kincaid poked Kaden in the eye to the delight of the fans.

Timmy Danger and Facade each tagged into the match and squared off momentarily, before Kaden Sade and Jason Kincaid tagged back into the match. Facade remained in the ring as The Renegades of Flight hit Kaden Sade with double chops, double kicks, another set of double kicks, a double atomic drop, and two more double chops that sent Kaden Sade to the mat.

With Timmy Danger back in the match, the bad guys took control. Timmy started by working the arm. Next, he distracted the referee while Kaden choked Kincaid with the top rope. They whipped Kincaid into the corner. Sade charged but was thrown over the top rope onto the floor. Timmy Danger charged but was met with a Kincaid kick. Kincaid almost made the tag to Facade, but Kaden Sade knocked Facade off the apron and prevented it.

Facade cleared house once he was finally tagged in by the beaten Kincaid. Facade got Sade into a torture rack, but Sade escaped and whipped him into the corner. Surprisingly, Facade hit the corner and went up into a handstand on the turnbuckles, confusing Sade who tried to charge Facade but missed.

With all four men in the ring, Timmy Danger and Kaden Sade attempted a double superplex on Kincaid but were caught by Facade. Timmy Danger fell onto the mat and Kaden Sade found himself in a torture rack. From the top rope, Kincaid stomped on Sade in the torture rack, then again on Timmy Danger on the mat.

In the end, Danger and Sade picked Kincaid up for an atomic drop, but found themselves on the receiving end of two headbutts from Jason Kincaid. As Kincaid held the two men, Facade walked the top ropes and sprung off with a nasty kick. From the other corner, Facade picked up Jason Kincaid and threw him into Timmy Danger for the pin.

WINNERS: RENEGADES OF FLIGHT

MATCH #6
MATT CROSS vs. TRE LAMAR
NGW CHAMPIONSHIP

Tre Lamar chokes Matt Cross to the dismay of the referee

Many wrestling fans are familiar with the work of Matt Cross. From his days in CZW as M-Dogg, to his time in Lucha Underground, and more recently in promotions such as NWA and MLW, Matt Cross has had a long and successful career. Cross won the NGW Championship on Halloween at Nightmare in the Old City in a fatal four way against Rich Swann, Alex Zayne and his opponent for this night, Tre Lamar.

These two opponents were obviously familiar with each other. The match started with a flurry of criss-crosses, reverses, go-behinds, and hand springs. After a reset, the pair engaged in a similarly impressive flurry of offense before a second reset.

As the match settled in, Tre Lamar connected with an elbow to the eye of Matt Cross. When Tre charged, however, Cross moved and picked Lamar up for a back breaker. Cross continued the barrage with hard chops to the chest of Tre Lamar. Matt grabbed Tre by the back of the head and slammed it into one turnbuckle. Cross pointed at another turnbuckle. With fan approval of the idea, Cross rammed Tre’s head into that turnbuckle, then the third. On the fourth attempt, Tre blocked and tried to reverse, but Cross reversed again and hit the headbutt as the crowd erupted.

Tre Lamar would regain some control with a drop kick to the back of Matt Cross that sent the champion outside the ring. Tre parlayed this momentum into a successful tope suicida to Cross on the outside and threw Matt back in the ring. From the apron, Tre landed a springboard somersault splash on Cross, but managed just a two count. Lamar missed with a reverse press off the top rope, which gave Cross the chance to hit two clotheslines and huge forearm from off the ropes.

After a Pelé kick and a frog splash connected for Tre Lamar, the action spilled outside. From there, Tre Lamar threw the champion back in the ring but got hit with a cutter trying to re-enter. Cross climbed to the top rope, hit a perfect shooting star press to retain the title.

WINNER: MATT CROSS

MATCH #7
MOOSE vs. RICH SWANN
IMPACT WRESTLING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

Rich Swann is in a party mood before the IMPACT Champion arrives

The headline match of the evening, for a good reason, was a match for the IMPACT Wrestling World Championship between champion Moose, who recently cashed in his “Call Your Shot” against brand new champion Josh Alexander at Bound For Glory, taking on former IMPACT and NGW champion Rich Swann. Swann entered to Lionel Richie’s “All Night Long” and looked ready to party. Moose entered to his traditional theme song and looked ready to get down to business.

The fans were loud and evenly split again as cheers for both competitors filled the arena until they were combined into a “Both these guys! Both these guys!” chant. Moose extended his hand to Swann for a handshake. Swann looked wary but went to accept. In true form, though, Moose pulled back his hand and flipped off the challenger instead.

As the match got underway, a Swann dropkick sent Moose outside the ring. From the apron, Swann kicked Moose in the face and went for a hurricanrana. The champion caught Rich and threw him into the guardrail. The referee almost counted Swann out, but the challenger made it back into the ring at the count of nine.

Moose took his boot and stepped on the face of Swann until the referee counted to four, then he did it again. If that wasn’t enough, Moose pulled Swann’s hair and threw his face into the turnbuckle with great force. Dazed, Swann rolled outside the ring. Moose followed the challenger outside, however, and threw him back in.

The champion told the crowd to be quiet so he could smack the chest of Rich Swann with a chop. Swann reversed and hit a chop of his own. Moose reversed again, but missed on his chop attempt, which allowed Swann to landed a series of blows and start what looked like a comeback. Moose would have different plans. A choke slam sent Swann crashing to the mat, to which the champion exclaimed, “It’s time to take out the trash.”

Moose landed a fall away slam, but when he charged Swann in the corner, the challenger moved at the last second to avert disaster. Moose charged twice more and missed on both tries. Swann tried to sneak a victory with a roll up, but got just a two count. Swann tried a crucifix but could not secure the pin. Feeling the tide turn, the challenger bombarded Moose with punches to the face which stunned the champion long enough for Swann to hit a cutter and a Lethal Injection, but it was still not enough to get a three-count.

At that moment, Kaden Sade appeared from the dressing room and distracted Swann just as he appeared ready to claim victory. When Swann turned around, Moose connected with a nasty spear and drove the challenger to the mat for the successful title defense.

After the match, Swann grabbed the microphone. He addressed Sade directly and said that Kaden’s day would come and that he intended to “Whoop that ass.” Swann said he did not regain his championship that night, but he gained a lot of fans. When he returns in the future, Swann said he and his fans are gonna party all night long.

WINNER: MOOSE

This was Next Generation Wrestling’s first show in the state of Virginia and they brought the star power with them, for sure. The match announcements had me ready for this event well in advance. I don’t know when I will make it Knoxville, Tennessee, but when Next Generation Wrestling returns to Virginia, I will be there.
