Live Review – Assault Wrestling Alliance “Calm Before the Storm” – 5/28/22

Von Milla is no longer “Vicious.” He’s now “Irresistible”

Assault Wrestling Alliance held its latest event “Calm Before the Storm” from the Assault Asylum in Waldorf, Maryland on May 28, 2022. Here’s what happened:

MATCH #1
ZION HART vs. VON MILLA vs. WARWULF KREED

WarWulf Kreed will return and bring some friend with him next time

In the opening moments of this match, WarWulf Kreed, who claimed to be disrespected by not being given a title match, stood at ringside and watched as “The Mat Monster” Zion Hart and the newly “Irresistible” Von Milla battled between the ropes. When Zion Hart made his first pinfall attempt on Milla, Kreed finally slid in and broke it up.

Kreed threw Zion Hart into the ring steps outside, then returned to the ring to focus on Milla. WarWulf nailed Milla with a spinebuster, but Hart slid in to break up the pinfall. Kreed again turned his focus to Hart, but found himself stuck in a modified Cattle Mutilation and nearly submitted. When Kreed made it to his feet, Hart tried a German Suplex, but could not get Kreed over until Milla assisted the effort with a dropkick.

With Kreed on the outside, Milla climbed to the top but was caught in a cross body by the powerful Hart who drilled him with a fall away slam. Before Hart could do more damage, Milla picked him up in a fireman’s carry and dropped him with a modified F5 as Kreed returned to the ring and broke up the pin. Kreed’s pin attempt on Milla was broken up by Hart, but with Milla down on the mat, Kreed followed a suplex with a pin without impediment.

In his post match interview, WarWulf Kreed continued to express his displeasure at not being given a title opportunity. Kreed said he deserves a shot at a real champion next time. And, who knows? He might even bring some friends with him.

WINNER: WARWULF KREED

MATCH #2
MOUNTAIN MAN EVEREST vs. THE CWO
2-ON-1 HANDICAP MATCH

Stan Stylez and RJ Morgan taunt Mountain Man Everest

Unfortunately, it was announced the Mountain Man Hyde would not be available to compete in this tag team match against the Creamy World Order, but Mountain Man Everest was more than happy to take on RJ “MuthaFlippin” Morgan and Stan Stylez by himself.

The cWo seemed confident as they strode to the ring, but once there, they showed no interest in actually getting in. Morgan eventually climbed in, but quickly tagged out after two shoulder tackles and throwing his pants at Everest had no effect. Everest offered a test of strength to Stylez, but Stan could not reach Everest’s hand. Stylez climbed on the back of the referee for some heightening, but still no good.

Eventually, Stan would even things up with an eye rake to the big man which set up a chance for Stylez to now throw his pants at Everest. Three consecutive pairs, to be specific. Obviously, this had no real effect, but when Morgan snuck up and clipped Everest at the knee, Stylez pounced. The cWo took turns choking Everest on the ropes and distracting the referee. At one point, Everest tried to rally with a series of elbows, but Stan raked his eyes yet again, called in RJ Morgan, and set up a gyrating double elbow.

Stylez and Morgan whipped Everest in for a double clothesline, but he broke through and rebounded off the ropes with a double clothesline of his own. With the momentum and the crowd behind him, Everest whipped both members of the cWo into the corner and splashed them both. As they stumbled out of the corner, Everest grabbed Stylez in a side slam and put Morgan in an inverted DDT at the same time! Stylez escaped a choke slam, but could not avoid his own whipped cream in his mouth from Mr. Salazar. A stunned Stylez turned around as Everest hit the choke slam.

WINNER: MOUNTAIN MAN EVEREST

MATCH #3
ANTHONY ATHENS (c) vs. IRVIN LEGEND
AWA MERCILESS CHAMPIONSHIP

Irvin Legend with a sneak attack before the bell rings

Irvin Legend, who I first encountered at Virginia Championship Wrestling back in November 2021, blindsided AWA Merciless Champion Anthony Athens as Athens made his way to the ring. Legend pummeled Athens on the outside and, as the bell rang, continued to pummel Athens inside the ring. Legend taunted the crowd as he choked Athens on the ropes and argued with the referee who tried to break it up.

Athens got a boot up as Legend came off the second rope, then hit him with a spinning side slam which sent Legend outside the ring. Since this was a no-disqualification match, Legend went to the timekeeper’s table and grabbed the Merciless title belt to use on Athens. The Golden Gladiator followed Legend outside, took the belt from him, and smashed him into the ring post.

Legend countered some of Athens’ offense and worked the leg for several minutes. Legend moved into an arm bar, then tried to whip Athens into the ropes. The champion rebounded with a big boot and an over the shoulder facebuster which sent Legend back to the outside for a breather. Athens followed Legend out, threw him back inside, and hit Legend with a spear. As Legend rose to his feet, he was able to sidestep a running axe kick, but could not avoid the lariat from a rebounding Athens.

WINNER: ANTHONY ATHENS

Alejandro Avery says, “Money Talks”

Before the intermission, Alejandro Avery, George Broman, Jr. and Bryan Simmons were joined at the podium by their partner in the eight-man elimination tag team main event, AWA Champion Vladimir Koloff. JD3 asked Alejandro Avery how The Cartel, Inc. managed to acquire a tag team partner of such esteem. Avery said the answer is simple. Money talks. The gigantic Koloff took the microphone and told the crowd that they will defeat Paragon and his band of merry men.

Beau Crockett and Paragon still can’t get along

Following the intermission, The Cartel, Inc.’s opponents in the main event, Beau Crockett, Olijah Friday, Chris Moore and Paragon discussed the main event with JD3. Former rivals, now teammates, Beau Crockett and Paragon had to be separated after Crockett called Paragon’s outfit a “Might Morphin Purple Suit.” Paragon said that everything will be alright as long as Beau keeps himself in check. According to Paragon, “It’s mind over matter. Because we don’t mind and they don’t matter.”

MATCH #4
STATIC AGE vs. FLY FELLAS (c)
AWA TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

The Fly Fellas are still your AWA Tag Team Champions

At March Madhouse, the AWA Tag Tam Champions, the Fly Fellas, were challenged by Mr. Salazar and The Static Age for this match for the Tag Team Championships. As always, this was a two-out-of-three falls championship match.

The champs started with a flurry of offense. They charged the ring and began pummeling Madd Maxx Morrison and River the Sickopath until they both rolled out of the ring. AK faked a tope suicida onto both men, but instead pulled down the ropes so Isaiah Frazier could hit them with a plancha.

Back inside the ring, Madd Maxx Morrison would trick Isaiah Frazier into a test of strength. Each time Frazier reached out his hand, Morrison slapped him. After three of those, Morrison kicked Frazier in the face and grabbed a front face lock. When Morrison charged Frazier in the corner, however, Frazier got boot up then hit a basement dropkick and a monkey flip to Morrison. Frazier tagged in AK who held Morrison as Frazier came off with a knee strike to take the first fall.

The Static Age recovered quickly from their defeat in the first fall and used efficient tag team work to keep AK in the ring for an extended period. At one point, Morrison simply lifted his boot and River threw AK’s head into it. Soon after, River used Morrison’s head like a battering ram to AK. To keep the referee distracted, Morrison walked over and slapped Frazier standing on the apron. When Frazier tried to fight back, the referee stopped him and The Static Age went back to double-teaming AK.

AK tried desperately to fight back and nearly made the hot tag to Frazier. However, the referee’s back was turned. River convinced the referee to void the tag. As Frazier argued with the referee yet again, Mr. Salazar clocked AK with his cane. Morrison hit an urunage and River connected with a flying headbutt to AK to win the second fall.

In the third fall, River the Sickopath evaded a charging Frazier and choked Isaiah on the ropes until the referee called for break. Frazier would counter an Irish Whip with a second rope cross body, which gave him time to make the hot tag. AK hit River with a back elbow, then hit Maxx with a reverse Atomic Drop. As Maxx rolled out of the ring, Mr. Salazar jumped up onto the apron. AK pushed River into Mr. Salazar, then lifted him into The Fly Fellas Suplex/Clothesline finisher to set up a steel cage return match at AWA’s show on July 30.

WINNERS: FLY FELLAS

MATCH #5
BEAU CROCKETT, OLIJAH FRIDAY, CHRIS MOORE & PARAGON vs. THE CARTEL, INC.
8 MAN TAG TEAM ELIMINATION MATCH

Chris Moore about to abuse George Broman

As Mark Henry would say, at this point, there’d been enough talk. It was time for the main event. The eight man tag team grudge match would be contested under elimination rules. The Cartel, Inc. had no answer for Chris Moore early, as both Bryan Simmons and Alejandro Avery would find out. The action eventually spilled outside the ring where Beau Crockett leapt from the top rope onto every member of The Cartel, Inc. while, at the same time, Olijah Friday looked to follow with a tope suicida. Mr. Salazar hit Friday in the back with his cane, Alejandro Avery entered and hit a swinging neck breaker and Olijah Friday was eliminated.

Now down a man, the good guys once again called on Chris Moore. Moore hit a splash and side slam to George Broman, Jr., then press slammed George out of the ring. Bryan Simmons entered and took control, allowing Broman to re-enter to double team the big man. Out of nowhere, Moore dropped Broman with a nasty lariat and Broman was gone. Almost immediately after that, Moore hit another lariat to Simmons for the second Cartel elimination.

Avery and Koloff immediately double teamed Moore in their corner, which brought Paragon and Beau Crockett into the ring. As the referee instructed Beau and Paragon to return to their corners, Moore tried to pick Avery up for a body slam. Koloff snuck in with an axehandle to the back of Avery, that pushed both men down to the mat where Avery got the pin to eliminate Moore.

At this point, Paragon and Beau Crockett looked around and realized they were the only ones left for their team and it was up to them to get along to secure the victory. Things started out well, as Beau and Paragon made quick tags to keep Koloff tied up. Things were going so well, that Paragon rode on Koloff’s back and smacked his ass as the fans laughed.

As the match wound down, Beau Crockett’s sharp shooter on Koloff was broken up by Avery, but Beau followed with a surprise Superman punch to Koloff who tagged out to Avery. When Crockett and Paragon double teamed Alejandro in the corner, Koloff tagged himself back in and began arguing with Alejandro. Avery smacked the big Russian told him to “Do what I pay you to do!” In response, Koloff choke-slammed Avery and walked out.

With Koloff gone, Crockett tagged in Paragon officially. Paragon hit an urunage to Avery, then put him in the ankle lock. Beau Crockett joined in, applied a crossface to Avery at the same time, and help secure the final submission and the victory for the good guys.

As the show ended, Beau and Paragon stood face to face, deciding whether to shake hands or not. Just as it looked like it might happen, Mr. Salazar snuck into the ring and hit Crockett with his cane and quickly escaped like a coward. Mr. Salazar then chided Avery and Broman for their failures after the match. The two men attacked Salazar who was saved by The Static Age and Mountain Man Everest.

SOLE SURVIVORS: PARAGON & BEAU CROCKETT
