Live Review – Assault Wrestling Alliance “Fall Brawl” 10/29/22

Assault Wrestling Alliance held its latest show, “Fall Brawl” from the Assault Asylum inside Unique Sports Academy in Waldorf, Maryland on October 29, 2022. Here’s what happened:

MATCH #1
“DIRTY” DAVE RIVERA vs. LANDON HERNANDEZ
EXHIBITION MATCH

Two new arrivals in the AWA squared off in this exhibition match to open the show and they did not disappoint. Rivera seemed to have it easy in the opening moments as he worked the leg of Landon Hernandez inside the ring, then pulled Landon outside and flung him into the steel steps.

Back inside the ring, Hernandez fought his way out of a rear chin lock and mounted a rally with a chin breaker and a short arm clothesline. After a standing exchange of slaps and punches, Landon charged Rivera in the corner, but got lifted up and over onto the apron. Undaunted, Hernandez used a shoulder tackle to stun Dirty Dave and a springboard cutter to put him away.

WINNER: LANDON HERNANDEZ

MATCH #2
ZION HART vs. RICO HENDRIX

Rico Hendrix’ manager, Dazzling Derek Benesch, chided The Maryland Mat Monster, Zion Hart, before this match began. Benesch told Hart that Rico Hendrix took him from nothing and trained him only to be thanked with a challenge for a match. Benesch tried to give Hart a chance to take the easy way out, lie down, and take the pin. To no one’s surprise, Hart refused. Hart went on offense immediately with a flurry that included a really cool springboard German suplex.

Benesch would be a thorn in Hart’s side all night, however. First, Derek jumped on the apron and caused a distraction that allowed Hendrix to land a massive superkick to Hart. Next, Hendrix distracted the referee while Benesch choked Hart with the bottom rope. Toward the end of the match, Benesch attempted to distract the referee from counting the pinfall after a Hart tilt-a-whirl backbreaker.

Although, Hart managed to knock Bensch off the apron and hit a spinebuster to Hendrix, he missed on a splash in the corner. The opportunistic Rico Hendrix followed with four knees to the back and a step up kick to Hart’s face to earn the victory. In his post-match interview, Hendrix reminded the AWA faithful that he is their Toxic King who will lift Assault Wrestling to new heights.

WINNER: RICO HENDRIX

MATCH #3
BEAU CROCKETT vs. IRVIN LEGEND

This is the match I had circled on my card when the show was announced. The White Wolf, Beau Crockett explicitly stated that he wants another shot at AWA Heavyweight and Open Champion, Vladimir Koloff after a heartbreaking loss to Koloff in the finals of the AWA Open Championship tournament back in April. First, he would have to find a way to defeat AWA trainer Irvin Legend, a rising star who has appeared on Smackdown and AEW Dynamite in just the past few weeks.

During the first half of the match, Legend spent more time outside the ring than inside. When Crockett thwarted Legend’s kip up, Legend powdered. When Legend could not escape a Crockett hammerlock, Legend powdered. When Legend got back in the ring and immediately got hit with a lariat and a fisherman’s suplex…you guessed it, Legend powdered.

It turns out, Legend was just biding his time for the right moment to strike. With the help of interference from Mr. Salazar, Legend took control. He used a modified, extended version of the Garvin Stomp and a blatant choke with a knee to Crockett’s back with his neck on the ropes, then struck a pose for the crowd as Crockett tried to crawl to safety.

After the pose, Legend charged in one corner, but Crockett got an elbow up. Crockett followed with a shotgun dropkick and a German suplex, but missed on the Superman punch. Legend countered with an elbow and put his feet on the second rope to gain leverage for the pin. Crockett still managed to kick out, which prompted Legend to argue with the referee over the speed of the count. In the corner, Crockett waited for Legend to finish arguing and speared Legend out of his shoes the moment Legend turned around. From there, The White Wolf climbed to the top rope, hit his signature elbow drop, and ended the night for Irvin Legend.

WINNER: BEAU CROCKETT

MATCH #4
VLADIMIR KOLOFF (c) vs. EVEREST
AWA OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

On August 16, 2022, AWA management announced that dual titleholder, Vladimir Koloff, would be required to defend both titles at every show moving forward. This prompted an angry response from Koloff who promised to return to AWA in October to make things right. In the meantime, the head booker scheduled Koloff for his first pair of title defenses, the first of which would be an I Quit match for the Open Championship against top contender, Mountain Man Everest.

The action spilled outside the ring quickly and stayed out there for a while. At various points, both Koloff and Everest rolled in and out of the ring to reset the referee’s count. Once they returned to the ring, it was Koloff in control as he worked the leg of Everest. Koloff wrapped Everest’s leg around the ropes, elbow dropped the leg, and nearly got the submission with a leg lock. Everest kicked out momentarily, but Koloff came off the ropes with a clip to the leg and returned to the leg lock. At that point, the champion demanded Everest quit or have his leg broken.

Of course, Everest would not be done in so easily. He managed to kick out of the leg lock once again, and took to the outside for a steel chair. Koloff followed and took two hard chair shots to the back. The champion eventually managed to wrest the chair from Everest inside the ring and hammered the leg repeatedly with it. Still, Everest refused to concede. Angered, Koloff went back to the leg lock and held it tight until Everest simply passed out.

Koloff continued to attack the unconscious Everest after the bell until Brymstone, Koloff’s challenger for later in the evening who had been doing commentary for this match, ran in to make the save and set the table for the main event.

WINNER: VLADIMIR KOLOFF

MATCH #5
BLOOD BROTHERS vs. FLY FELLAS (c)
AWA TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP (2/3 FALLS MATCH)

AWA newcomers, The Blood Brothers, Maxx Mercy and Raze made a statement just moments into their first shot at the AWA Tag Team Championship, held by The Fly Fellas. As soon as the bell rang, Raze lifted AK up into for a Samoan Drop as Maxx Mercy came off the top rope with a moonsault to quickly put The Blood Brothers up 1-0 in this two out of three falls match.

With the crowd in disbelief, Isaiah Frazier began the second fall with a flurry of offense in an attempt to even the score. Frazier hit a monkey flip and tagged in AK for a double basement dropkick. The Blood Brothers reversed an Irish Whip into an air raid slam to regain control and moved AK into their corner to cut off the ring. It was obvious, from the look on his face, that Isaiah Frazier was getting more and more frustrated at AK’s performance.

When Frazier tagged back in, he stopped to express his concerns to AK and the two partners began pushing each other. Luckily, Frazier noticed Maxx Mercy coming out of the corner of his eye, ducked a clothesline and slammed Mercy into the mat with an STO. For some unknown reason, AK suddenly tagged himself back in, fell backwards lazily, and got the pin to even the score at one pinfall a piece.

AK started the third fall and was double teamed relentlessly until he evaded a charging Maxx Mercy, hit a German Suplex and made the tag to Frazier. Isaiah cleared Raze from the apron and hit a springboard corkscrew plancha onto both Blood Brothers. Back inside the ring, Frazier hit a belly to belly suplex and Blue Thunderbomb, but got held up when the Blood Brothers’ manager, OTP, grabbed Frazier’s foot.

Frazier turned his attention to OTP briefly, which allowed Mercy to hit a splash and throw Frazier across the ring. Mercy whipped Frazier into the ropes and both men clotheslined each other. Frazier crawled to his corner for the tag first, but AK had different plans. AK laughed as he jumped off of the apron to avoid Frazier’s tag, then watched as the Blood Brothers hit a German suplex/clothesline combo finisher to win the third fall and the tag team titles.

WINNERS AND NEW CHAMPIONS: THE BLOOD BROTHERS

MATCH #6
TY AWESOME vs. “COLOSSAL” MIKE LAW vs. GEORGE BROMAN, JR.
VACANT AWA CRUISERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP

Originally, this match was to be a fatal four way elimination match. However, Mantaquilla Merc was unavailable for the event and the match was converted to a triple threat to decide a new AWA Cruiserweight Champion. George Broman, Jr. took the intelligent approach and rolled out of the ring as soon as the bell sounded, leaving Mike Law and Ty Awesome in the ring to battle it out. When Broman re-engaged, Law and Awesome double teamed him until he rolled out of the ring once again.

Later, Ty Awesome hit a spinning kick off of an Irish whip, then an elbow drop, and a suplex to Broman but could not get the pin. Awesome charged Broman in one corner, but Broman moved and threw Awesome up and out of the ring. Broman hit a basement dropkick to Ty and ended up outside the ring, as well. Colossal Mike Law followed with a tope con hilo to both men and threw Broman back inside the ring.

Law missed a springboard somersault and found himself in a George Broman chin lock. As Law attempted to work his way out of the hold, Ty Awesome dropped both men with a cross body from the top rope. When Broman rolled outside the ring once again, Awesome hit several running forearms and a running knee to Mike Law. The Colossal One countered with a flurry that ended with a basement lariat, but could not get the pinfall.

Soon, both men fought their way into one corner and up onto the top rope. Awesome managed to hit a superplex and climbed back to the top rope. Law moved out of the way at the last second, hit a gourdbuster and a frog splash, and covered Ty Awesome to become the new AWA Cruiserweight Champion.

WINNER AND NEW CHAMPION: “COLOSSAL” MIKE LAW

MATCH #7
VLADIMIR KOLOFF (c) vs. BRYMSTONE
AWA HEAVYEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP

Vladimir Koloff’s second match of the evening did not start off well. Brymstone mounted some offense early and was not fooled when Koloff tried to slow things down by offering a handshake. Brymstone grabbed Koloff by the head and rammed it into all four turnbuckles, then stood on the second rope and punched Koloff in the face repeatedly as the crowd counted along.

Koloff managed to turn the tide off of a reversal in one corner, then stomped on Brymstone and stood on his neck until the referee forced a break. In response, Koloff told the referee, “I don’t like you!” The champion punished Brymstome with a Samoan Drop and a reverse neck breaker. When Brymstone tried to fight back, Koloff stuck his thumb in the challenger’s eye.

Later, Brymstone evaded a charging Koloff in one corner, then hit a back drop, top rope elbow drop, and a Superman punch that send Koloff to the outside to regroup. Brymstone followed and the two men brawled around ringside. Koloff rolled Brymstone back inside and grabbed a chair. The referee took the chair before Koloff could use it, but failed to move when Koloff whipped Brymstone into the corner. As a result, the referee was smushed into the corner by the weight of Brymstone and knocked out by the impact from the chair.

Brymstone rebounded out of the corner with Superman punch and rolled on top of Koloff, but there was no referee to count the pinfall. Brymstone ran over and awakened the referee then attempted a double underhook suplex. Koloff reversed with a back body drop, but missed on a lariat and got hit with a stunner. Koloff fell backwards and ended up with his arms tied up in the ropes. As the referee tried to help free the champion, Koloff kicked Brymstone in the crotch, freed himself from the ropes, and nailed the challenger with a lariat for the victory.

WINNER: VLADIMIR KOLOFF
