Live Review – SKPW “Surface of Doom IV: Grudge” 11/12/22

Superkrazee Pro Wrestling held its latest show, “Surface of Doom IV: Grudge” from the Skid Row Wrestling Academy in Westville, New Jersey on November 12, 2022. Here’s what happened:

MATCH #1
RAYO vs. RYAN MOONEY

The opening match featured two competitors who are very familiar with one another from their days in the Ring of Honor Dojo. Early in the match, Rayo implored Ryan Mooney to adhere to the Code of Honor, only to use the handshake to mask a kick to the stomach. Later, when Mooney tried to counter Rayo’s offense, Rayo bit his arm. Somehow, that did not get Rayo disqualified. So, when Mooney tried to start a rally again moments later, Rayo started to gnaw on Mooney’s arm once again.

Mooney watched as Rayo strutted around the ring, taunting the crowd, and demanded Rayo hit him. Mooney hulked up with each shot to the face, so Rayo again decided bite Mooney. This time, however, Mooney blocked the bite. When Rayo tried a back suplex, Mooney flipped backward, landed on his feet, and bit Rayo right on the ass.

Quickly, Mooney hit a running dropkick and a Falcon Arrow, then climbed to the top rope. Rayo met Mooney up top and a struggle ensued until Mooney bit Rayo’s arm. Rayo fell backward onto the mat, but managed to evade the subsequent Mooney splash. Rayo hit a double underhook back breaker, but missed on a drop kick in the corner which gave Mooney the chance to roll up Rayo into a bridge pin for the victory.

WINNER: RYAN MOONEY

PROMO

Tim Dynamite, in street clothes, made his way to the ring, with Ivy Platinum by his side. Dynamite issued an open challenge for his Skid Row Heavyweight Championship in the days leading up to this event, but could not wait to find out who his opponent would be. Dynamite demanded his opponent come to the ring and was shocked when “The Kryptonian” Darien Hardway’s music hit. Hardway called Ivy Platinum a prostitute, referred to himself as the next Skid Row Heavyweight Champion, and told Tim Dynamite, “I’m still the Alpha Male up in this bitch!”

MATCH #2
SOUTH PHILLY’S FINEST vs. THE RENOS vs.
BIRDS OF THE SUN vs. PROLIFIC
SKID ROW TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

As soon as the bell rang, the fight spilled all over the arena in this match to crown the inaugural Skid Row Tag Team Champions. The only ones left in the ring, GKM and Leo Sparrow hit back to back springboard planchas onto everyone else at ringside. Birds of the Sun used quick tags and good teamwork to keep Luca Brazzi in their corner for a while, until Sparrow fell back into the Renos corner and T.J. Reno tagged in.

T.J. Reno took punishment from both South Philly’s Finest and Prolific for several minutes until he managed to reverse a powerbomb attempt into an ensiguri and tagged Ty Reno. Ty knocked Marcus Marquee out with a nasty headbutt and hit the Ty-Plex on Tyree Taylor. SPF ran in and double teamed Ty Reno until GKM came from nowhere with a top rope dropkick that sent both members of SPF out of the ring. Taylor snuck up behind GKM as Marquee returned to the ring and Prolific hit a back suplex/neck breaker combo to GKM. T.J. Reno returned and pulled the top rope down to send a charging Taylor to the outside, and followed with a gourdbuster to Marcus Marquee.

As Prolific cleared the ring, Luca Brazzi snuck up and slapped T.J. Reno in the back. T.J. turned his attention to Brazzi, but noticed Jimmy Konway coming from behind with a handful of baby powder. Reno ducked and Brazzi got all of the baby powder to the face. Ty Reno followed with a spear in the middle of the cloud of powder and covered Brazzi for the victory.

WINNERS AND INAUGURAL CHAMPIONS: THE RENOS

MATCH #3
TONY LEYENDA (c) vs. ISAIAH WOLF
SKPW HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP

Tony Leyenda has been the Superkrazee Heavyweight Champion for nearly a year. During that time, he has faced numerous challenges from worthy competitors, but none as tough as the current Pro Wrestling R Champion, and leader of Prolific, Isaiah Wolf. The fans were behind Wolf and hoped for a title change, especially after Leyenda’s corner man, Prince Nana, took the microphone and demanded respect for his champion.

Leyenda dominated most of the match, but seemed to get more frustrated as the contest wore on. At one point, Leyenda pressed his knee into Frazier’s back with his neck on the ropes. When the referee called for a break, Leyenda distracted him so Prince Nana could choke him even more. From there, Leyenda lifted Frazier up into a suplex for several seconds before sending Frazier crashing to the mat.

Though Frazier looked to be unconscious, Leyenda reached for the title belt to hit Frazier. The referee managed to wrestle it away from the champion as Frazier hit a running knee to the face followed by a pump handle slam. When the challenger could not secure the pinfall, he argued with the referee about the count. Leyenda crawled over and took the title belt from Prince Nana once again. This time, Leyenda made contact and the referee called for the disqualification.

WINNER BY DQ: ISAIAH WOLF

MATCH #4
TIM DYNAMITE (c) vs DARIEN HARDWAY
SKID ROW HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP

With his promo fresh in everyone’s minds, Darien Hardway looked to make good on his promises to defeat Tim Dynamite and win the Skid Row Championship. Dynamite talked a big game, but when the bell rang, he wanted no parts of “The Kryptonian.” Dynamite spent so much time on the outside that Hardway eventually followed.

Back inside the ring, the opportunistic Tim Dynamite took control of the match with a knee to the midsection, chop to the back and a splash, then distracted the referee so Ivy Platinum could choke Darien Hardway on the bottom rope. Later, Hardway caught Dynamite on the top rope and slammed him to the mat, but Dynamite caught him in a small package and nearly got the pinfall.

The champion followed with a step up DDT, a double underhook suplex, and two Pele kicks. After each move, Dynamite attempted a cover with no success. At this point, wondering what could possibly work to finish off Hardway, Dynamite started slapping Hardway in the face repeatedly. Infuriated, Hardway caught one of Dynamite’s slaps, threw him into the corner for a charging European upper cut, and drilled him with a Jackhammer.

Again, Ivy Platinum jumped up onto the apron to cause a distraction and gave Dynamite the chance to hit another Pele kick and quickly climb to the top rope. Hardway met the champion up top and superplexed him down to the mat. Once again, Ivy Platinum got involved. This time, she entered the ring and stood between Hardway and Tim Dynamite. Hardway charged with a Superman punch for Dynamite that ended up connecting with Ivy. In the commotion, Dynamite rolled Hardway up and held the tights to escape with a win.

WINNER: TIM DYNAMITE

MATCH #5
BRAXX vs. JAY SAWYER
WEAPONS MATCH

After a break to set up the ring for this weapons match, death match aficionados Braxx and Jay Sawyer took to the ring for a bloody battle. The action spilled outside quickly and Sawyer struck first with multiple barbed wire chair shots, as well as wooden door strikes, to the head and back of Braxx.

Inside the ring, Sawyer played possum in one corner. When Braxx approached, Sawyer hit him with a light tube over the head and grabbed a pizza cutter. Sawyer stood on the second rope and used the pizza cutter to dig a groove in Braxx’s head, then grabbed skewers and stabbed them into Braxx’s face.

Braxx returned fire after Sawyer’s attempt to body slam him onto a bed of tacks failed. Braxx ultimately slammed Sawyer onto the tacks, connected with several light tube shots to the head, then splashed Sawyer in one corner with more light tubes between them. Undeterred, Sawyer flipped Braxx off and began a parade of light tube shots (I counted fifteen in a row) to the head of Braxx.

Sawyer tried to slam Braxx on a stack of light tubes, but failed once more to get the big man in the air. Sawyer tried to DDT Braxx onto the lights, but Braxx held on and sent Sawyer into the exploding glass tubes. After an exchange of strikes in the middle of the ring, Sawyer finally got Braxx up, slammed him onto the light tubes, and covered him for the victory.

WINNER: JAY SAWYER

MATCH #6
DAMARIS DAWKINS (c) vs. RUTHLESS LALA
SKPW WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP

The champion was ready for the challenge presented by Ruthless Lala and looked to get started quickly. Dawkins hit a series of punches, a running hip attack, and a shotgun drop kick which sent Ruthless Lala to the outside. Lala sat in the crowd chatting it up with fans until the referee’s count reached six. At that point, she rolled in and out of the ring to reset the count.

Once she finally did return to the ring, Ruthless Lala proposed a test of strength, telling a wary Damaris Dawkins, “I know I fooled you last time, but look, one hand behind my back.” Dawkins fell for it, and Lala kicked her in the stomach. Now on offense, Lala stood on the apron and used Dawkins own hands to thrust her face-first into the turnbuckles three times. Lala used an arm bar and a long-held waist-lock/bear hug to keep Dawkins under her control.

Dawkins finally got her chance when Lala missed a discus lariat. Dawkins scurried around the ring as Lala chased, eventually putting her in small package for a near fall. After that, a crucifix attempt was a near fall. An Oklahoma Roll was another near fall. Ultimately, Dawkins took a punch to the face and reeled into the corner. When Lala charged, Dawkins moved and rolled her up for good.

WINNER: DAMARIS DAWKINS

MATCH #7
PRIMAL FEAR (c) vs. THE REP
SKPW TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

The match started with a flurry that ended with both teams battling on the outside. When the action returned to the ring, Primal Fear used a two-on-one advantage to work Dave McCall in one corner.

The Rep turned the tide with Primal Fear standing over each one of them landing punches in one corner. Dave and Nate simultaneously picked Omen and Hodder up and powerbombed them into one another in the center of the ring. McCall and Wallace worked Gabriel Hodder over in their corner for a while, but got caught by surprise when Hodder escaped a vertical suplex mid-air and converted in to a double DDT.

Wallace was able to prevent Hodder from making the tag after the DDT, but, moments later, Hodder got a boot up to stop a charging Wallace and rolled through to make the hot tag. Matthew Omen hit a short arm knee to McCall and a running knee to Wallace, then threw McCall into a knee from Hodder to set up a high low that should’ve gotten the fall. Unfortunately, the referee was distracted with a seemingly injured Hodder in one corner and did not see the cover.

As Omen went to check on the referee and his partner, McCall threw the title belt into the ring for Wallace. Omen turned around just in time and stepped on the belt to prevent Wallace from using it, as Hodder ran over and knocked Dave McCall off of the apron. McCall got back up on the apron and distracted the referee as Wallace picked up the title belt once again. This time, Wallace made contact and fell on top of Hodder for the easy one, two, three.

WINNERS AND NEW CHAMPIONS: THE REP

MATCH #8
SAMAEL FAWZI vs. HOMELESS VON (c)
SKID ROW UNITED STATES CHAMPIONSHIP

From his presentation, you would not assume Homeless Von is a master technician in the ring. However, the first few minutes of this match told a different story. Von and Fawzi started off with some impressive chain wrestling, each competitor reversing and countering the other, including several quick near falls. From there, the action sped up, with both combatants flying around the ring with acrobatic and aerial maneuvers.

Von missed a springboard moonsault which gave Fawzi the upper hand. Fawzi hit successive back breakers, missed a tilt a whirl slam, but dropped Von with a pop-up European upper cut. Von returned fire with a clothesline, back elbow, flying forearm, and a springboard flying back elbow. Von whipped Samael back and forth from corner to corner and hit a splash each time. The final time, Fawzi lifted Von up and over onto the apron. Von tried to springboard back into the ring, but missed.

Fawzi capitalized with a discus forearm, a gourdbuster, and a Michinoku driver, but managed only a two count. Fawzi climbed to the top rope but missed the splash. Von took to the apron to try the springboard move again. This time, however, he nailed the referee by mistake. With the referee knocked out, Tony Leyenda ran in and powerslammed Von. As the referee awoke from his nap, Fawzi stood Von up on his feet, kicked him square in the groin, then rolled him into a Texas Cloverleaf.

WINNER AND NEW CHAMPION: SAMAEL FAWZI

MATCH #9
DANIEL ALEXANDER vs. KJ THRILLS vs. DUNCAN ALEEM
TRIPLE THREAT MATCH

Duncan Aleem thought he would get a head start on the match with a surprise double clothesline to the other two competitors. Instead, they ducked and went for a double superkick. Aleem thought better of it and rolled out of the ring, allowing Thrills and Alexander to deal with each other. Soon, though, Aleem would sneak in to try another double clothesline. Aleem missed again, but managed to throw Daniel Alexander out of the ring in order to face off with Thrills one-on-one.

As Thrills and Aleem battled, Daniel Alexander tried desperately to get back into the match. At one point, Alexander hopped up on the apron near the corner in which Thrills and Aleem were battling. Aleem stopped, knocked Alexander back down to the floor, and turned his attention back to Thrills. Later, after hitting a tilt-a-whirl slam and running knee to the head of K.J. Thrills, Aleem noticed Alexander getting back into the ring and immediately clotheslined him back out again.

As the match wound down, Aleem put Thrills in an airplane spin and converted that into an air raid slam. Again, Alexander hopped up onto the apron only to be immediately knocked off by Aleem. The brief distraction gave Thrills enough time to regroup and evade a Duncan Aleem elbow drop. Aleem threw Thrills into Alexander who hit a sling blade to Thrills, and a Superman punch to Aleem. Alexander hit a 450 splash from the top rope, but, just as he attempted to cover Aleem, K.J. Thrills ran in, hit a shining wizard to Alexander, and covered Aleem himself.

WINNER: KJ THRILLS

MATCH #10
JONATHAN GRESHAM vs. ADRIEN SORIANO

When taking on a master mat technician the caliber of Jonathan Gresham, you better have a game plan. As this match got under way, it was obvious Adrien Soriano had two. First, Soriano needed to have a way to escape Gresham’s clutches, no matter what hold he applied, or else be doomed. Second, if you get the advantage, work the back.

The contest started slowly with Gresham and Soriano feeling each other out. As the two wrestlers put on a mat wrestling clinic, it was clear Gresham had a reversal and a counter for every move Soriano made. For a while, Soriano simply focused on escaping Gresham’s headlock. It sounds easy, but every time Soriano moved, Gresham tightened his grip and/or used a takeover to get Soriano back on the mat.

Soriano eventually managed to create some space once he broke free of the headlock and hit an ensiguri, several low kicks, a splash in the corner, and a bulldog. Gresham tried to retreat to the apron, but Soriano sprung to the second rope and leapt off with a spinning heel kick. When Gresham rolled back into the ring, Soriano immediately worked Gresham’s back. Soriano put his knee in Gresham’s back on the mat, then hit two different style back breakers.

Gresham tried a German suplex, but his back gave out. Gresham tried one more time, but took too long and Soriano backed him into the turnbuckles. Finally, Gresham got a boot up on a charging Soriano and quickly hit a shotgun dropkick from the second rope. This time, Gresham found the strength to slowly lift Soriano up in a German suplex into an impressive bridge pin for the near fall.

Soriano’s plan was not yet foiled. He used a single leg crab to work the back even more, but Gresham crawled to the ropes to force a break. Gresham mounted some offense briefly off the break, but Soriano caught Gresham climbing to the top rope, superplexed him back down to the mat, and went back to the single leg crab. Again, Gresham barely made it to the ropes and forced a break.

A furious exchange of strikes ensued once both men made it upright. Soriano connected with a headbutt and a back elbow, but a rejuvenated Gresham kipped up and used a Dragon Screw Leg Whip to hobble Soriano, then hit a reverse Frankensteiner and a dropkick to the knee. With Soriano’s leg sufficiently damaged, Gresham locked in an old fashioned figure four leg lock. Soriano did not submit easily at first, but tapped out immediately once Gresham tightened the hold.

WINNER: JONATHAN GRESHAM
